SIERRA BULLETS
The Sierra MatchKing 7mm 197-grain HPBT match bullets represent precision engineering built for long-range rifle shooting and competitive accuracy. These .284-caliber projectiles are purpose-built for shooters who demand extreme precision on the range, delivering the kind of consistency that has made MatchKing a cornerstone of match-grade ammunition for decades. If you're loading for competition, record attempts, or demanding accuracy work, these bullets are engineered to perform where it matters most.
The 197-grain bullet design combines a sleek 27-caliber elongated ogive with Sierra's final meplat reduction (pointing operation) to maximize ballistic coefficient, helping your rounds cut through wind and maintain velocity downrange. A crucial detail for match shooters: the bearing surface to ogive junction uses the same 1.5-degree angle found in many match rifle chamber throats, promoting precise bullet-to-bore alignment and supporting the kind of shot-to-shot consistency competitive and precision shooters demand.
This is a target and competition round first, and it's important to understand its design limitations. While MatchKing bullets are sometimes used on varmints, they are not recommended for most hunting applications—their construction prioritizes accuracy over the reliable, consistent expansion needed for hunting game. If you're planning to hunt, Sierra's Hornet or BlitzKing lines are the better choice.
Each box contains 500 bullets, making it practical for serious handloaders and competitive shooters who go through volume. Note that your rifle will need a barrel twist rate of 1:7.5 or faster to stabilize these projectiles properly.
| Caliber | 7mm/.284 |
| Bullet Weight | 197 grains |
| Bullet Type | Hollow Point Boat-Tail (HPBT) |
| Diameter | .284" |
| Count per Box | 500 |
| Minimum Barrel Twist | 1:7.5 |
Sierra does not recommend MatchKing bullets for hunting. Their design prioritizes accuracy and ballistic performance for target and competition shooting; they won't deliver the reliable expansion needed for humane, ethical hunting. For hunting 7mm applications, consider Sierra's Hornet or BlitzKing alternatives.
Your rifle must have a barrel twist rate of 1:7.5 or faster to properly stabilize these projectiles. If your barrel twists slower than that, these bullets won't be stable and accuracy will suffer.
These are reloading components—bullets only, not loaded cartridges. You'll need a reloading press, dies, cases, primers, and powder to assemble finished ammunition.
While some shooters do use MatchKing bullets on varmints, Sierra notes that their design won't provide the same reliable, consistent expansion as their lighter-jacketed varmint-specific offerings like the Hornet or BlitzKing lines. For varmint work, those alternatives are more purpose-built.
