Proof Research
A Proof Research 243 Cal bolt action barrel blank gives you the foundation for a precision rifle build—or a upgrade path for an existing action. This 28" stainless steel barrel arrives unbreeched and unthreaded, ready for your gunsmith to finish the threading, chamber, and crown to your exact specifications. Proof Research earned their reputation in match-grade barrels by acquiring decades of Lawrence Barrels' expertise; today they manufacture their own stainless barrels in-house with obsessive attention to bore consistency and accuracy.
The blank is machined from 416R stainless steel, a pre-hardened chromium stainless that was engineered specifically for precision rifle barrels. 416R machines cleanly for accurate drilling and reaming, polishes to a uniform finish for hand-lapping, and delivers the strength and toughness needed to handle real-world chamber pressures. The material's homogeneous microstructure ensures consistent hardness along the entire length—critical for uniform rifling and bore accuracy. Every barrel is individually inspected with a bore scope before it leaves the shop.
The competition contour profile, 1:7" twist, and 4-groove rifling make this blank well-suited to serious rifle builds—whether you're assembling a target rifle, a precision hunting rifle, or working up a competitive load. Since it arrives as a blank, you'll partner with a competent gunsmith to thread the muzzle and breech, chamber it for .243 Winchester, and crown the muzzle to your preferences.
| Caliber | .243 Winchester |
| Barrel Length | 28" |
| Contour | Competition |
| Twist Rate | 1:7" |
| Grooves | 4 |
| Material | 416R Stainless Steel, double stress-relieved |
| Condition | Barrel blank (unbreeched, unthreaded) |
No. A barrel blank arrives unbreeched (no breech threads) and unthreaded (no muzzle threads). You'll need a competent gunsmith to thread both ends, chamber the breech, and crown the muzzle. The bore itself is rifled, lapped, and inspected at the factory.
Your gunsmith will need to cut breech threads to fit your action, chamber the barrel for .243 Winchester to your specifications, cut muzzle threads (if you want them), and crown the muzzle. The rifling and bore are finished and ready.
Yes. The competition contour profile, hand-lapped bore, and individual quality inspection make this blank a solid choice for match-grade rifle builds, target shooting, or precision hunting rifles.
416R is a pre-hardened chromium stainless steel engineered specifically for precision rifle barrels. It machines cleanly and accurately, polishes uniformly for lapping, delivers high tensile strength and toughness to handle chamber pressures, and has a homogeneous microstructure that responds predictably to heat treatment—all critical for consistent rifling and bore accuracy.
