Building a match-grade .308 rifle starts with a solid foundation, and a PROOF Research .308 stainless steel bolt-action barrel blank is exactly that. This 28-inch M24 contour barrel blank delivers the material and dimensions you need to create a precision rifle, whether you're assembling a long-range hunting rifle, a competition build, or a custom target gun. Stainless steel resists corrosion in the field and offers excellent heat dissipation, making it a popular choice for shooters who demand reliability and longevity.
At 6 lbs 9 oz and featuring a 1:9 twist rate, this barrel blank handles the full spectrum of .308 projectiles effectively. The 1.20-inch shank diameter accommodates standard action bolt-face dimensions, and the M24 profile—a moderate, steady taper—balances handling weight with rigidity, keeping harmonics consistent shot to shot. This is a genuine blank, so you'll need gunsmithing expertise or a qualified gunsmith to chamber, thread, and fit it to your action.
PROOF Research has built a reputation for precision-grade barrels, and this blank maintains those standards in raw material. If you're barreling a custom rifle and want to start with quality steel and a proven profile, this blank gives you the control to build exactly what you need.
| Caliber | .308 Winchester |
| Barrel Length | 28 inches |
| Twist Rate | 1:9 |
| Contour | M24 |
| Shank Diameter | 1.20 inches |
| Material | Stainless Steel |
| Weight | 6 lbs 9 oz |
The 1.20-inch shank diameter is compatible with standard bolt-action receivers, but proper installation requires a qualified gunsmith. The blank must be chambered, threaded, and headspaced to your specific action and ammunition for safe, accurate operation.
The 1:9 twist is a general-purpose rate for .308 Winchester, suitable for the vast majority of factory and handloaded ammunition used in hunting and target shooting. Always verify twist compatibility with your intended bullet weights and your gunsmith before commissioning the build.
No, this is a blank. It requires gunsmithing work: chambering, barrel threading, action installation, and headspacing must be performed by a qualified gunsmith to make it safe and functional.
The length and profile work well for long-range hunting rifles, precision target builds, and competition platforms where you want a balance of accuracy and handling characteristics. Discuss your specific build goals with your gunsmith to confirm this blank matches your project.
