Proof Research
A Proof Research 243 Cal bolt action barrel blank gives you the foundation for a precision rifle build, ready for your gunsmith to thread and chamber to your exact specs. Built from double stress-relieved 416R stainless steel—the same material favored by match shooters and precision rifle builders—this 28" barrel blank is machined to Proof Research's competition contour profile with a 1:7.50" twist rate and 4 grooves. Whether you're assembling a dedicated target rifle, a competition gun, or a hunting build that demands accuracy, starting with a quality barrel blank from a maker with real pedigree in precision steel makes a measurable difference.
Proof Research earned their reputation the hard way. When they acquired Lawrence Barrels' 15 years of manufacturing expertise in 2012, they brought that knowledge in-house and doubled down on quality control. Every barrel starts as 416R stainless—a chromium stainless specifically engineered for consistency in precision rifle applications. The material's homogeneous microstructure ensures uniform hardness along the entire length, critical for rifling to exact groove dimensions and bore accuracy. 416R machines cleanly for precise gun drilling and reaming, polishes uniformly for hand lapping, and offers the strength-to-toughness balance that handles chamber pressures without compromise.
This is a barrel blank, not a finished barrel—your gunsmith will handle threading and chambering to your cartridge and specifications. The rifling, hand lapping, and bore inspection happen at the factory, so you're getting Proof Research's quality control built in. The competition contour profile suits shooters who want a responsive, accurate barrel for target work or field use without excess weight.
| Caliber | .243 |
| Barrel Length | 28" |
| Contour | Competition |
| Twist Rate | 1:7.50" |
| Grooves | 4 |
| Material | 416R Stainless Steel (double stress-relieved) |
| Finish | Barrel blank (ready for gunsmith threading and chambering) |
This is a barrel blank. Your gunsmith will need to thread the breech end and chamber it to your desired specification. Once those steps are complete, the barrel is ready to install on your action.
416R is a chromium stainless steel specifically engineered for precision rifle barrel manufacturing. It offers excellent machinability for drilling and reaming, uniform polishability for hand lapping, and a homogeneous microstructure that responds consistently to heat treatment. The result is a barrel that maintains tight tolerances and bore accuracy across its full length while handling typical rifle chamber pressures.
The competition contour profile suits both target work and field use. The 1:7.50" twist rate and .243 caliber combination is effective for a range of bullet weights and applications, though the specific suitability depends on your intended use. Your gunsmith can advise on optimal chambering specifications for your goals.
Yes. Each barrel is hand lapped and individually inspected with a bore scope at the factory before it leaves Proof Research.
