The Magpul ZHUKOV-U handguard is a purpose-built short-handguard replacement for modern AK-platform rifles, delivering a comfortable, contemporary grip surface on firearms where factory furniture falls short. Sized specifically for shorter-barreled AKs like the AK-102, AK-104, and AK-105, this plum polymer handguard combines an internal aluminum chassis with injection-molded ergonomics to give you a solid, heat-dispersing platform that handles like a modern rifle, not a relic.

Unlike the longer original Zhukov, the U version is 1.5" shorter and optimized for compact builds while staying compatible with stamped and milled AK-47 and AK-74 receivers running standard-length gas systems. The internal aluminum chassis clamps directly to the barrel with minimal flex, excellent heat dissipation, and a rock-solid installation. M-LOK accessory slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions let you mount lights, brakes, and rail segments where you need them, and the vented gas tube cover manages thermal signature. A genuine bonus: unlike the original Zhukov, the ZHUKOV-U lets you retain your military-issue cleaning rod, an practical feature often overlooked in modern upgrades.

This handguard counts as one US compliance part under 18 U.S.C. section 922(r), a consideration for builder-spec builds. Installation requires permanent removal of the factory handguard retaining cap and forward sling mount. The ZHUKOV-U is also compatible with the Ultimak gas tube rail if you're running optics off the gas tube. Due to the typical tolerances across AK-pattern firearms, minor fitting may be needed during installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What AK rifles is the ZHUKOV-U handguard compatible with?

The ZHUKOV-U fits stamped and milled AK-47 and AK-74 rifles with standard-length gas systems. It's optimized for short-barreled models such as the AK-102, AK-104, and AK-105. You can also mount it on full-length barrel rifles if you prefer a shorter handguard, though minor fitting may be required depending on receiver tolerances.

Can I use the military-issue cleaning rod with this handguard?

Yes. Unlike the original longer Zhukov handguard, the ZHUKOV-U is designed to allow you to retain use of the factory cleaning rod, making it more practical for field maintenance and compliance builds.

What's included for mounting and does the factory sling mount stay?

Installation requires permanent removal of the factory handguard retaining cap and forward sling mount. Those factory components cannot be retained. The handguard comes with an internal aluminum chassis that clamps directly to the barrel.

Is this handguard compatible with optics?

The ZHUKOV-U is compatible with the Ultimak gas tube rail system if you want to mount optics off the gas tube. Accessory mounting is available via M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions for lights and other gear.
