Geissele Automatics
The Geissele Automatics Reaction Rod 10169 is a gunsmithing tool that transforms how you handle AR15, M4, and M16 upper receiver work. If you've ever fought with a vise block while trying to safely install or remove a barrel, flash hider, gas block, or handguard, you already know the frustration of trying to apply torque without damaging your receiver. This steel reaction rod fixes that problem by design: instead of clamping your aluminum upper in a vise block and hoping the twisting force doesn't distort the receiver or damage the finish, the rod's integral splines engage directly into your barrel extension, allowing the barrel nut wrench torque to transfer straight to where it belongs.
Made from 4140 chrome moly steel, the Reaction Rod is built tough enough for the job and designed to be secured in a bench vise horizontally or vertically, depending on your setup and preference. Slide your upper onto the rod, lock it down, and work clean. No more marring finishes on your receivers. No need to remove optics, mounts, or rail accessories before you start—the rod works from the barrel extension side, leaving your top rail completely clear. That's a genuine quality-of-life improvement if you're building, maintaining, or gunsmithing AR-pattern rifles with any regularity.
Whether you're a serious builder tackling multiple uppers, a gunsmith looking to protect customer firearms, or a dedicated shooter who wants to service your own rifle the right way, this tool pays for itself in saved time and eliminated re-work. It's the kind of accessory that doesn't sound exciting until you use it—then you wonder how you ever worked without it.
| Caliber Compatibility | .223 Rem / 5.56 NATO |
| AR Platform Compatibility | AR15, M4, M16 upper receivers |
| Material | 4140 Chrome Moly Steel |
| Part Number | 10169 |
| Manufacturer | Geissele Automatics |
The Reaction Rod 10169 is designed for AR15, M4, and M16 upper receivers chambered in .223 Rem or 5.56 NATO.
Instead of clamping your aluminum upper in a vise block (which transmits twisting force directly to the receiver and its small index pin), the Reaction Rod's integral splines lock into your barrel extension. This routes all torque from the barrel nut wrench into the barrel extension itself, not the receiver body or finish.
Yes. Because the rod works by engaging the barrel extension from inside the upper, you don't need to remove optics, mounts, or any accessories on your M1913 rail. Your rifle stays fully configured while you work.
The Reaction Rod is designed to be gripped in a standard bench vise. You can orient it horizontally or vertically depending on your workbench setup and personal preference—both configurations work equally well.
