Federal
Federal Premium HammerDown ammunition in 357 Magnum brings factory loads specifically engineered for lever-action rifles—the first centerfire round designed from the ground up for tubular magazine feeding and side-gate loading systems. Whether you're running a Henry or another lever gun, HammerDown cycles reliably through the action without the feeding hiccups that can plague standard handgun ammo in rifles. The 170-grain bonded soft point projectile is built to perform at the velocities these rifles naturally deliver, balancing expansion and weight retention on game-sized targets.
The engineering details matter here. Federal tuned the ballistics for lever-gun barrel lengths rather than handgun or carbine platforms, and they even chamfered the case mouth to ease feeding through tubular magazines. The bonded construction keeps the bullet together on impact, so you get reliable expansion without bullet fragmentation. Muzzle velocity sits at 1240 feet per second—a practical balance for lever-action performance. The nickel-plated brass resists corrosion and cycles smoothly, box after box. This is ammunition built for a specific job: getting your lever gun to run like it was meant to.
Developed in partnership with Henry Repeating Arms, HammerDown is the answer for shooters who've grown tired of fighting feed problems or chasing performance with inappropriate ammo. If you own a .357 Magnum lever gun and want factory ammunition that actually fits the platform, this is purpose-built for you.
| Caliber | .357 Magnum |
| Bullet Weight | 170 grains |
| Bullet Type | Bonded Soft Point |
| Muzzle Velocity | 1240 fps |
| Ballistic Coefficient | .185 |
| Case Material | Nickel-plated brass |
| Round Count | 20 per box |
Yes. HammerDown is specifically designed for tubular magazine and side-gate loading systems. The chamfered case mouth and engineered cartridge geometry ensure flawless feeding through lever guns—no jamming or hangups.
HammerDown's 170-grain bonded soft point is built for terminal performance in lever-action rifles. The bonded construction provides controlled expansion and weight retention, making it appropriate for game-sized targets at lever-gun effective ranges.
While this ammunition will function in a .357 Magnum revolver or pistol, it is specifically engineered for lever-action rifles. The ballistics and velocity are optimized for rifle barrel lengths and cycling, not handgun use.
Nickel plating resists corrosion better than standard brass and promotes smoother feeding and ejection through the action. Over time and across many rounds, this translates to more reliable cycling and easier cleanup.
