Speer
Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .357 Magnum 135 grain JHP ammunition is purpose-built for defensive carry in compact revolvers and short-barrel handguns. This is ammunition engineered specifically for the ballistic reality of short barrels—where powder burn rates and velocity windows are different from full-size pistols. If you're running a snubnose .357 for personal protection or backup duty, Gold Dot Short Barrel is designed to perform in that exact role.
The engineering behind Gold Dot centers on Speer's Uni-Cor bonding process, which fuses the bullet jacket to its lead core at the molecular level during initial construction. This bond virtually eliminates core-jacket separation—the failure mode that undermines less sophisticated hollow points under demanding conditions. The hollow point cavity itself is precision-formed in two stages: the first controls how far the bullet can expand, the second governs expansion rate. This two-step cavity design gives Speer engineers precise control over the expansion and penetration characteristics for each specific caliber and weight.
Gold Dot rounds are validated against the FBI's rigorous testing protocols for service-class handgun ammunition. Those tests measure penetration, expansion, and retained weight through both bare ballistic gelatin and gelatin protected by common barriers like heavy clothing and auto glass. The finished bullet features a smooth profile for reliable feeding in semi-automatic handguns, though this round is most commonly used in revolvers. Each box contains 20 rounds.
If you're evaluating .357 Magnum ammunition for personal defense in a short-barrel wheelgun or considering it alongside other premium defensive loads, Gold Dot Short Barrel deserves your attention. It represents decades of Speer's handgun ammunition research, and its track record in both law enforcement and civilian use is extensive.
| Caliber | .357 Magnum |
| Bullet Weight | 135 Grains |
| Bullet Type | Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) |
| Rounds Per Box | 20 |
| Application | Short Barrel Personal Protection |
Yes. Gold Dot Short Barrel ammunition will fire in any .357 Magnum revolver. However, it is ballistically optimized for short-barrel performance. If you're using a full-size or longer-barrel revolver, Speer offers standard Gold Dot loads that are tuned for full-size ballistics.
Uni-Cor bonds the bullet jacket to its lead core one molecule at a time at the beginning of bullet construction. This virtually eliminates core-jacket separation, which can occur in lower-quality hollow points when the jacket and core separate inside a target. A bonded bullet maintains structural integrity throughout expansion, improving terminal performance and consistency.
Yes. Speer validates Gold Dot ammunition against FBI testing protocols for service-class handgun cartridges. Those tests measure penetration, expansion, and retained weight in both bare gelatin and gelatin protected by common barriers like clothing and vehicle glass.
Gold Dot is premium defensive ammunition designed for personal protection, not target practice. For training and range work, consider less expensive practice ammunition to keep cost down. Reserve Gold Dot for duty carry or defensive training scenarios.
