Speer
The Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 9mm Luger +P 124 Grain JHP ammunition is engineered for reliable performance in compact carry firearms and short-barrel handguns. This is the load you choose when your defensive pistol prioritizes concealability over sight radius—when every inch of barrel length matters. Gold Dot has earned its reputation through decades of law enforcement adoption and real-world performance, and this short-barrel variant is specifically tuned to deliver consistent expansion and penetration from reduced velocities that come with shorter slides.
The heart of Gold Dot ammunition is Speer's Uni-Cor bullet construction, which bonds the jacket to the core at the molecular level during the initial stages of manufacturing. This bonding virtually eliminates the core-jacket separation that can compromise reliability under stress. The hollow point cavity itself is engineered through a patented two-stage formation process: the first stage controls how far the bullet can expand; the second manages the rate of expansion. Every caliber and weight combination is individually tuned for optimum expansion and penetration characteristics, ensuring the round performs predictably across a wide range of barrier conditions.
Speer validates Gold Dot performance against the FBI's rigorous service-class handgun test protocols, which evaluate penetration, expansion, and weight retention in both bare gelatin and gelatin protected by common barriers (drywall, sheet metal, heavy clothing). These standards-based protocols give you confidence the ammunition will perform when it matters. The finished bullets are polished to a smooth profile that feeds reliably in semi-automatic handguns, eliminating the feeding issues that can plague some hollow-point designs. Each box contains 20 rounds, making Gold Dot Short Barrel a practical choice for training, qualification, and duty carry.
| Caliber | 9mm Luger |
| Pressure Rating | +P |
| Bullet Weight | 124 Grains |
| Bullet Type | Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) |
| Round Count | 20 per box |
| Bullet Construction | Uni-Cor bonded core |
Yes. This ammunition fires safely in any firearm chambered for 9mm Luger. The "Short Barrel" designation refers to the fact that the hollow point cavity and powder charge have been optimized for the lower velocities produced by short-barrel pistols, not that it only functions in compact guns. Standard full-size 9mm handguns will function reliably with this load, though you may achieve slightly higher velocities than in short-barrel platforms.
+P indicates this ammunition is loaded to higher pressure than standard 9mm Luger. Your firearm must be rated for +P ammunition to use these rounds safely. Check your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer if you're unsure whether your handgun is +P rated.
Speer validates Gold Dot ammunition against FBI test protocols that measure how the bullet performs through common barriers including bare gelatin, drywall, sheet metal, and heavy clothing. The specific penetration and expansion performance of this 124-grain short-barrel load has been tuned to meet these standards.
Uni-Cor bonds the bullet's jacket to its core at the molecular level during the very first stage of bullet construction, rather than simply crimping or mechanically joining them. This virtually eliminates the risk of core-jacket separation under the stress of impact, ensuring consistent performance and retained weight.
