RCBS
If you're loading .38-40 Winchester for lever-action rifles or single-shot hunting rigs, the RCBS 3 Die Roll Crimp Set for Group E straight-walled cartridges is built for the job. This three-die set handles the essential steps of case sizing, expansion, and bullet seating with a roll crimp finish—all designed to produce consistent, reliable ammunition. The roll crimp method works particularly well for straight-wall cases where reliable bullet retention matters, especially in firearms that cycle rounds through a magazine or tube feed.
The Sizer Die does the heavy lifting first, resizing your fired brass back to spec and removing the old primer in one stroke. You'll need to lubricate your cases before sizing—a straightforward step that protects both your brass and the die itself. Once sized, the Expander Die opens the case mouth to the right diameter so your bullet seats smoothly and creates a slight bell or flare at the case mouth. That flare helps guide the bullet into the case and supports consistent feeding in your rifle.
The Seater Die completes the process, pressing the bullet to your target depth while simultaneously applying a roll crimp around the case mouth. This crimp grips the bullet securely—critical for magnum loads or rifles with aggressive actions where bullet pull could otherwise occur. RCBS dies are built from quality steel and designed for longevity in both casual reloaders' shops and high-volume loading benches.

Yes. Cases must be lubricated before sizing. This protects both the brass and the die from damage and ensures smooth, consistent sizing.
A roll crimp wraps around the case mouth and grips the bullet securely. It's especially valuable for straight-wall cartridges used in rifles with magazine feeds or tube feeds, where bullet retention prevents pull and ensures reliable feeding and performance.
The Expander Die opens the case mouth to the proper diameter so your bullet seats correctly. It also imparts a slight bell or flare at the case mouth, which helps guide the bullet smoothly into the case during seating and supports reliable feeding in your rifle.
