The Pietta 1851 Navy .44 caliber revolver is a historically faithful reproduction of one of America's most iconic percussion cap handguns. Built on the original design that saw service during the Civil War era, this 5-1/2" barrel model delivers the authentic feel and reliable performance that makes black powder shooting rewarding for reenactors, historical shooters, and anyone drawn to traditional firearms. Whether you're setting up for competition, living history events, or simply exploring the mechanics and craft of antique weaponry, the 1851 Navy remains a benchmark choice.
This particular version comes fitted with checkered walnut grips—a practical upgrade over smooth wood, offering better purchase and control during extended shooting sessions. The case hardened finish on the frame provides both durability and that distinctive color variation characteristic of period-correct metalwork. With a six-round cylinder and the straightforward cap-and-ball operation that defines the percussion cap system, there's no mystery here—just honest engineering that's proven itself across generations.
The .44 caliber bore strikes a good balance between power and recoil, making the gun manageable for shooters of varying experience levels while still delivering meaningful ballistics. The 5-1/2" barrel length gives you the sight radius and velocity you need for reasonable accuracy at typical black powder distances without making the gun unwieldy in the field or at the bench.

Percussion cap revolvers like the 1851 Navy use black powder, a separate lead ball, and a percussion cap for ignition—each loaded individually into the cylinder. Modern cartridge guns use self-contained ammunition. The 1851 requires more time and attention to load but offers shooters a direct connection to 19th-century firearms technology and the satisfaction of mastering a deliberate, step-by-step process.
Yes, the .44 caliber and five-and-a-half-inch barrel make it viable for hunting small to medium game under appropriate distance and shot placement. Black powder hunting is legal in most states and seasons—check your local regulations before heading afield.
Case hardening is a heat-treating process that hardens the outer layer of steel while keeping the interior slightly softer and more resilient. It creates the distinctive mottled color pattern you see on period firearms and improves durability and wear resistance compared to bare steel.
Yes. You'll need black powder (or a substitute), lead balls in .44 caliber, percussion caps, and a way to seat them—typically a revolver loader or powder measure. Many shooters also use a patch or cloth with the ball to help with ignition and accuracy. The learning curve is enjoyable, and the ritual is part of the appeal.
