Montana Decoy
The Montana Decoy Co The Freshman Buck is a lightweight, compact deer decoy designed to provoke territorial responses from mature bucks during the hunting season. Unlike heavy plastic decoys that demand serious pack space, the Freshman folds flat for easy transport and deploys in seconds when you reach your setup. Its ears-back, aggressive stance sends a clear challenge signal—young buck energy that makes older bucks want to establish dominance, without the intimidation factor that can shut down a mature animal.
This decoy works effectively as a standalone lure or paired with a doe decoy to create a breeding scenario that draws bucks into bow range. The compact, lightweight design means you're not trading mobility for realism; at just 35 ounces with poles included, it's genuinely portable for foot hunters covering distance. The aggressive posture is the key—it's the posture that sells the story, not bulk or complexity.
If you're running a Teaser Tail (sold separately) for motion, the Freshman becomes even more convincing on the flats or in timber. You can also integrate it with Montana Decoy's Quickstand system (sold separately) for solid, adjustable positioning. Whether you hunt over food sources, bedding edges, or travel corridors, this decoy gives you an edge without weighing you down or eating up valuable backpack real estate.
| Weight (with poles) | 35 oz |
| Folded dimensions | 20" × 13" |
| Unfolded dimensions | 37" × 48" |
The Freshman works as a standalone decoy. Its aggressive posture is designed to challenge mature bucks on its own. That said, many hunters pair it with a doe decoy to create a more complete scenario—the combination often triggers stronger responses than either decoy alone.
The Freshman is dramatically lighter and more portable—35 ounces versus the bulk of traditional plastic decoys. It folds flat to pack easily, unfolds in seconds, and sends a challenge without the weight penalty. You're not sacrificing effectiveness; the aggressive posture does the work.
No, the Teaser Tail and Quickstand are sold separately. However, the Freshman is fully compatible with both, so you can add motion and positioning support as your setup demands.
It opens to full size in seconds. The foldable design eliminates assembly time while maintaining the aggressive posture that attracts territorial bucks.
