The Hornady ELD Match Target 22 Cal .224 52gr Extremely Low Drag-Match (ELD-M) bullets are purpose-built for precision shooters and reloaders who demand match-grade consistency. These .224 caliber rounds deliver the ballistic performance and shot-to-shot uniformity that competitive shooters and long-range target enthusiasts rely on. Whether you're fine-tuning loads at the bench or preparing for precision rifle competitions, ELD-M bullets are engineered to minimize variables and maximize accuracy downrange.
Hornady's ELD-M line uses a proprietary Heat Shield tip—a heat-resistant polymer designed to maintain its shape and aerodynamic profile under the extreme conditions encountered at extended ranges. Conventional bullet tips can deform under air friction heating, especially beyond 400 yards, degrading ballistic coefficient and accuracy. The Heat Shield tip resists this degradation, preserving the bullet's intended trajectory and energy retention. The result is a perfectly formed tip (meplat) that remains consistent from round to round and lot to lot, eliminating one of the major sources of shot-to-shot variance in precision handloads.
The 52-grain .224 diameter is a versatile match bullet suited to 22-250 Remington, .220 Swift, and similar small-caliber varmint and target cartridges. Hornady's meticulous quality control ensures that each box delivers the same ballistic coefficients and external dimensions, so your loads perform predictably across multiple loading sessions. If you're chasing sub-MOA accuracy and need bullets you can genuinely trust to shoot identical, look no further.
| Caliber | .224 (22 caliber) |
| Weight | 52 grains |
| Bullet Type | ELD-M (Extremely Low Drag-Match) |
| Part Number | 22491 |
| Tip Type | Heat Shield Polymer |
The .224 52-grain ELD-M bullets are designed for rifles chambered in cartridges like .22-250 Remington, .220 Swift, and other standard .224 caliber varmint and target rounds. Verify your specific cartridge and firearm before purchasing, and work up a safe load with established reloading data.
At extended ranges (400+ yards), aerodynamic heating can cause traditional bullet tip materials to soften and deform, reducing ballistic coefficient and degrading accuracy. Hornady's Heat Shield tip is engineered to resist this thermal degradation, maintaining the bullet's shape and aerodynamic profile under real-world long-range shooting conditions.
ELD-M bullets undergo rigorous quality control to ensure bullet-to-bullet and lot-to-lot consistency in weight, dimensions, and ballistic properties. This consistency is critical for precision handloading, helping you achieve repeatable accuracy across multiple reloading sessions and powder charge batches.
Match-grade ELD-M bullets prioritize precision and uniformity above all else. They feature superior ballistic coefficients, strict dimensional tolerances, and the Heat Shield tip technology—making them optimized for competition and long-range target shooting rather than hunting or general-purpose varmint work.
