The Caldwell 5" AR500 Steel Gong Target is a durable steel reactive target built for shooters who want audible, visual feedback without replacing targets every range session. Made from through-hardened AR500 steel at 3/8" thick, this gong delivers the satisfying ring and movement that keeps shooters engaged during practice, competition prep, or casual range days. The bright yellow finish makes hits easy to spot downrange, and the steel construction handles thousands of rounds before needing replacement.

Steel targets excel for high-volume shooting and rapid feedback—especially useful for centerfire rifle training where you're working on accuracy and speed. The Caldwell gong's compact 5" diameter makes it a versatile addition to any range setup, whether you're hanging it for precision work at distance or close-quarters shooting drills. Unlike paper or reactive splatter targets, you won't chase clays or tape patches between strings of fire.

Built to withstand impacts up to 3000 fps velocity and 3500 ft-lbs of energy, this target won't crater or crack under standard rifle and handgun loads. The powder-coat finish protects the steel from weather and wear, extending its service life across seasons of use. The hanging system lets you set it up quickly on your range stand or frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rifles and calibers can I safely shoot at this target?

The Caldwell 5" gong is rated for impacts up to 3000 fps velocity and 3500 ft-lbs of energy. Most centerfire rifle and handgun loads fall within this envelope, but you should always verify your specific cartridge's velocity and energy against the target's rating before shooting. When in doubt, consult ballistic data for your load or check with the manufacturer.

Does this target come with a stand or mounting hardware?

The target includes a hanging solution, so you can attach it to an existing range frame, stand, or target hanger. You'll need to provide the stand or support system itself.

How long will this steel target last?

AR500 steel gongs are designed to withstand thousands of rounds. The exact lifespan depends on shot placement, caliber, velocity, and distance—tighter grouping and consistent hits at safe distances maximize target life. The powder-coat finish protects the steel from corrosion, helping it perform across outdoor range conditions.

Is this target suitable for competition or just practice?

Steel gongs work well for both. The audible feedback and quick reset between shots make them popular for competition training, speed drills, and recreational shooting. Many shooters prefer them for building confidence and rhythm during practice sessions.
