Betts Tackle
The Betts Fat Gnat White/Black Size 12 is a compact popper fly designed for targeting panfish, bluegill, and other freshwater species that key on small surface disturbances. This topwater fly features a cork body paired with rubber legs that generate realistic movement and vibration on the water. The streamlined bullet-shaped profile cuts through weeds and delivers accurately on lighter tippet, making it a go-to pattern for sight-fishing in shallow water or working vegetation edges where a subtle presentation matters.
Whether you're working a farm pond at dawn or picking apart a weedy flat, the Fat Gnat's compact profile and responsive action make it a reliable choice across seasons. The Mustad hook and secure cork body design ensure durability through repeated casts and hungry fish. The white and black color combination provides good visibility to the angler and attracts strikes in mixed-light conditions.
Carry a few in your fly box for panfish outings, evening topwater sessions, or anywhere you want to cover shallow water efficiently without oversized commotion.

The Fat Gnat is a panfish pattern well-suited to bluegill, sunfish, and other small freshwater species that respond to topwater presentations. Its compact size and subtle action work well on ponds and weedy water where larger poppers can be counterproductive.
This is a Size 12 hook, a standard panfish popper size that balances castability on light rods with enough hook gap to set securely in smaller mouths. Smaller hooks also reduce spooking in shallow, clear water.
The cork is cemented to the Mustad hook, which provides a solid, long-lasting connection. Like all cork bodies, it will eventually show wear from use and water exposure, but proper drying between outings extends its life significantly.
Yes. The white and black coloration gives you good visibility to track the fly's position and strikes, while the compact profile and subtle action make it less likely to spook wary fish in shallow, clear conditions.
