APEX TACTICAL SPECIALTIES
The Apex Tactical Specialties Evolution K- and L-Frame Hammer converts your Smith & Wesson K-Frame or L-Frame revolver to double-action-only operation, making it a solid choice for shooters who want a dedicated DA-only wheelgun for duty, carry, or competition. Unlike stock hammers, this one eliminates the spur entirely—no single-action cocking possible—which simplifies your trigger press and removes a snag point from holster work. It's built from heat-treated 17-4 Ph stainless steel and precision-machined via wire EDM and CNC, then surface ground for consistency you can feel in every shot.
Apex engineered this hammer as a direct replacement for the MIM (metal-injection-molded) hammers found in standard S&W K- and L-Frame revolvers, including Performance Center models made after January 2012. The design incorporates the same pinned sear and stirrup geometry as higher-end Performance Center hammers, giving you upgrade-level internals without the Performance Center price tag. Installation is straightforward for anyone comfortable with revolver takedown; the sear, sear spring, stirrup, and pins arrive pre-installed on the hammer itself.
The package includes not just the hammer but also a fully machined Apex sear, a competition rebound slide spring (0.165" silver) for match work, a duty/carry rebound slide spring (0.160" green) for defensive carry, a firing pin, and a firing pin return spring. This gives you the parts needed for a complete conversion and the flexibility to tune spring rates to your preferred rebound speed.
| Fits | Smith & Wesson K-Frame and L-Frame centerfire revolvers (current production) |
| Material | Heat-treated 17-4 Ph stainless steel |
| Machining | Wire EDM and CNC machined, surface ground |
| Function | Double-action only (no single-action spur) |
| Sear Type | Fully machined Apex sear (pre-installed) |
| Included Springs | Competition rebound slide spring (0.165" silver), duty/carry rebound slide spring (0.160" green) |
| Included Parts | Firing pin, firing pin return spring, stirrup and pins |
The Apex Evolution K- and L-Frame Hammer works in current-production Smith & Wesson K-Frame and L-Frame centerfire revolvers. If your gun was made before January 2012 and is a Performance Center model, or if it's a J-Frame, N-Frame, or other revolver, this hammer will not be compatible. Verify your revolver's frame size and production date before ordering.
Double-action only means the hammer cannot be manually cocked back; every trigger press works through the full double-action stroke. The hammer has no spur, so there's no cocking lever. This design is popular in duty and carry revolvers because it eliminates an extra control and removes a potential snag point when drawing from a holster or moving through tight spaces. It also enforces a consistent trigger press every time.
You get the hammer with sear, sear spring, stirrup, and pins already installed, plus a fully machined Apex sear, two rebound slide springs (one for competition, one for duty/carry), a firing pin, and a firing pin return spring. Installation requires basic revolver takedown skills. If you're not comfortable working on your own gun, have a gunsmith handle the swap.
Yes. The package includes both a competition spring (0.165" silver) and a duty/carry spring (0.160" green) so you can tune the rebound speed to match your use case. Switching springs is a straightforward job that doesn't require disassembly of the hammer itself.
