The Winchester 1873 Sporter Octagon Grip Color in .357/.38 is a modern take on one of America's most iconic lever-action rifles. Built on the proven 1873 platform, this sporter delivers the smooth, fast-cycling action that made the original famous—ideal for hunters who value reliability, quick follow-up shots, and a rifle that handles well in brush or at moderate hunting ranges. The octagon barrel and grip color options give it character that stands out without sacrificing function.
This .357/.38 configuration is particularly appealing if you're building a rifle and revolver setup around the same ammunition—you can practice with light .38 loads and hunt with stouter .357 rounds, all through the same action. The 14-round capacity means you've got ample shots on hand, while the 24-inch octagon barrel balances velocity with handling in typical hunting situations. At 8 pounds, it's manageable for a full day afield without being so light that recoil becomes harsh.
The rifle ships with open sights—a bead front and semi-buckhorn rear—that are quick and intuitive for close to mid-range work. The black walnut furniture and satin oil finish give it a classic look that ages gracefully. Overall length of 43 inches keeps it nimble in vehicles or brush, while the 1:18.75 twist ensures good stability with the wide range of bullet weights available in both calibers.
Whether you're drawn to the 1873 for its heritage, its reliability, or its sheer shootability, this sporter-grade version delivers the gun without unnecessary frills. It's a working rifle for hunters who understand that simpler mechanisms often outlast complicated ones.
