The Weatherby Vanguard VGD Compact Hunter in 7mm-08 is a bolt-action rifle built for hunters who refuse to compromise on accuracy or ergonomics. Chambered in the versatile 7mm-08—a cartridge that punches well above its weight in hunting situations—this compact rifle is engineered to grow with you. The standout feature is its adjustable length of pull, which ranges from 12 to 13⅝ inches via a simple removable stock spacer, making it equally at home in the hands of a young or smaller-framed hunter and adaptable as they develop. That adjustability, paired with genuine sub-MOA accuracy and a street-smart price point, explains why the Vanguard Compact has become a go-to choice for families introducing the next generation to rifle hunting.

Accuracy is the Vanguard's calling card. Every rifle is guaranteed to deliver a 3-shot group of 0.99 inches or less at 100 yards from a cold barrel when fired with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition—a promise that's backed within two years of purchase. That level of precision comes from a cold hammer-forged, 20-inch barrel with a #1 contour, paired with a one-piece machined bolt body and integral recoil lug for rigidity where it counts. The tungsten Cerakote finish protects against the weather without adding unnecessary weight.

The control layout is straightforward and reliable: a match-quality two-stage trigger that breaks cleanly, a fluted bolt body that cycles smoothly, a fully enclosed bolt sleeve for weather sealing, and a 3-position safety that's intuitive under pressure. The hinged floorplate makes field loading and unloading quick and fuss-free. The injection-molded composite stock, finished in black with orange and grey accents, is tough enough for hard hunting and light enough that the rifle won't tire you over a day in the field. This is a rifle that handles the basics perfectly and won't distract you from the hunt.
