Ruger
The Ruger 90486 is a radial-ported muzzle brake designed for AR-15s and other rifles chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223 Rem. If you're running a direct-impingement rifle or any .556 build and want to cut felt recoil and muzzle rise without adding length or weight, this brake delivers straightforward performance. Built from alloy steel with a black oxide finish, it's tough enough for serious shooting and blends with most AR platforms.
Installation is simple: the brake threads onto 1/2"-28 muzzle threads—the standard for most AR barrels—and torques down to 15-20 ft-lbs with nothing more than a wrench. No crush washers needed, which saves a step and one less thing to source. At 1.75 inches overall length and just 1.7 ounces, it doesn't bloat your rifle or shift the balance. The radial port design works to manage gas and recoil energy without the aggressive side-blast some muzzle devices generate.
Made in the USA, this brake is purpose-built for AR-556 rifles and any other .223 or 5.56 platform with compatible threads. Whether you're working a range day, setting up a competition build, or dialing in a hunting rifle, it's a no-nonsense way to tame your rifle's impulse.
| Thread Pitch | 1/2"-28 |
| Caliber | .223 Rem / 5.56 NATO |
| Material | Alloy Steel |
| Finish | Black Oxide |
| Overall Length | 1.75" |
| Diameter | 0.75" |
| Weight | 1.7 oz |
| Torque Specification | 15–20 ft-lbs |
Yes, provided your barrel has 1/2"-28 muzzle threads, which is the standard for AR-15s. The Ruger 90486 is designed to fit AR-556 rifles and any other .223 Rem or 5.56 NATO rifle with 1/2"-28 threads.
The radial-ported design is engineered to reduce felt recoil and muzzle movement, helping you stay on target faster. Exact reduction depends on your specific rifle, ammunition, and shooting technique, but the brake manages both impulse and muzzle rise effectively.
You'll need an 11/16" open-end wrench or crescent wrench to install the brake. Torque it to 15–20 ft-lbs. No crush washers are required.
The radial-port design is intended to manage gas and recoil without the excessive side-blast associated with some muzzle devices. That said, any muzzle brake will produce noise and some gas direction; the radial layout helps minimize those effects compared to purely forward-venting designs.
