Rock Island Armory
The Rock Island Armory VRF14 12ga semi-automatic shotgun represents a compact, unconventional take on tactical shotgun design. With a 14-inch barrel and overall length of 26 inches, this short-barrel 12-gauge operates on a straightforward semi-automatic action and is built around a pistol-style grip—a practical choice if you're exploring alternatives to traditional pump or over-under shotguns for close-quarters defense or specialty hunting scenarios. It's a niche firearm that stands out for its form factor, not conventional utility.
Out of the box, the VRF14 ships with a 5-round magazine capacity. If that feels limiting, the shotgun is compatible with Rock Island's VR-Series 9-round and 19-round magazines, giving you flexibility to configure the gun to your needs and mission. Flip-up front and rear sights come standard, allowing quick target acquisition without optics dependence. Weight comes in at 6.6 pounds, making it handy enough to maneuver in tight spaces or from unconventional shooting positions.
Fair warning: a short-barreled, pistol-grip semi-automatic shotgun in 12-gauge with magazine-fed operation is purpose-built and requires a shooter who understands its ergonomics and recoil characteristics. This isn't a competition shotgun or a traditional hunting platform. If you're drawn to its compact profile and want a specialized tool that breaks from conventional shotgun design, the VRF14 deserves serious consideration. Just be certain it aligns with your legal use case and shooting discipline.
