The Pietta 1860 Army .44 Cal black powder revolver brings authentic Civil War–era ergonomics and proven mechanical design to modern black powder shooting. Built on the classic 1860 pattern that earned its reputation as one of the most balanced and reliable cap-and-ball revolvers ever made, this 8-inch barrel model splits the difference between maneuverability and sight radius. Whether you're competing in traditional black powder matches, hunting with period-appropriate arms, or exploring the rewarding discipline of cap-and-ball shooting, this revolver delivers the weight, handling, and performance you'd expect from a design that's stood the test of time.
The brass frame and blued barrel pairing creates the visual signature of the original, and the walnut grip provides authentic feel without sacrificing control during extended shooting sessions. The top strap sight and post front sight offer a practical sighting system—not fancy, but proven—that rewards good fundamentals. At 2.75 pounds with an overall length of 13.75 inches, it balances pointability with the heft needed for follow-up shots in rapid-fire scenarios. This is a single-action revolver, which means you'll index the hammer and manage each shot deliberately—exactly how these guns were intended to be run.
The 6-shot capacity in .44 caliber gives you adequate stopping power for hunting applications where black powder is legal and plenty of rounds for range work or competition. The Traditions/Pietta name carries real credibility in the black powder community; this isn't a wall-hanger. It's a functional, shootable piece that respects the heritage while delivering reliable performance out of the box.

A cap-and-ball revolver (also called a percussion revolver) is a muzzleloading firearm that predates cartridge ammunition. You load powder, a lead ball, and a cloth patch into each of the six chambers, seat the ball with the loading lever under the barrel, then place a percussion cap on the nipple at the rear of each chamber. When you pull the trigger, the hammer strikes the cap, igniting a spark that travels down the nipple to ignite the powder charge. It's a hands-on, deliberate process that many shooters find deeply rewarding.
The .44 caliber and 8-inch barrel make this revolver capable for hunting applications in jurisdictions where black powder firearms are legal. Shot placement and hunting regulations in your area should always guide your choice of firearm and ammunition.
The facts provided cover the revolver itself. For details on included accessories, loading tools, or documentation, contact Bosque Outdoors directly.
The 8-inch barrel is a classic length for the 1860 pattern, offering a good balance between sight radius for accuracy and overall length for handling and carry. Longer barrels may provide additional velocity and sight distance; shorter versions offer more compact profiles. The 8-inch is the workhorse choice.
