Lews Fishing
The Lews Laser MG Speed Spool baitcast reel delivers solid, no-nonsense performance for freshwater anglers who want dependable casting without breaking the bank. Built on the same engineering platform as higher-end Speed Spool models, the Laser MG proves that an affordable baitcaster doesn't have to sacrifice quality or reliability. With a 7.5:1 gear ratio and eight ball bearings, it's fast enough for reaction baits and precise enough for finesse presentations—a genuine all-rounder for bass, pike, and other gamefish.
The reel's frame and sideplate are graphite, keeping weight down while a 32mm anodized aluminum U-shaped spool and Zero Reverse one-way clutch bearing ensure smooth, consistent performance cast after cast. The externally adjustable magnetic braking system gives you control over backlashes without fiddling with internal adjustments, and the high-strength brass Speed Gears are precision-cut for longevity. A zirconia line guide reduces friction and wear, and the 95mm bowed aluminum handle with paddle knobs feels solid in your hand during long sessions on the water.
This is a reel that works hard without drama—no gimmicks, no premium price tag, just proven Speed Spool engineering in a compact, capable package. Whether you're fishing shallow grass, working topwater, or pitching to timber, the Laser MG handles the job and shrugs off weather thanks to its stainless steel double-shielded bearings and Speed Lube formula, which keeps things smooth in heat, cold, and humidity.
| Reel Type | Baitcast |
| Gear Ratio | 7.5:1 |
| Bearing System | 8 Bearings (stainless steel double shielded) |
| One-Way Clutch | Zero Reverse |
| Frame Material | One-piece graphite |
| Sideplate Material | Graphite |
| Spool | 32mm anodized aluminum U-shape |
| Braking System | Externally adjustable magnetic control |
| Line Guide | Zirconia |
| Drag System | Rulon |
| Handle | 95mm bowed anodized aluminum with paddle knobs |
A 7.5:1 ratio is mid-range—fast enough to work topwater, soft plastics, and reaction baits efficiently, but not so fast that it forces cramped wrist movements on all-day sessions. It's versatile enough to handle both power and finesse presentations across most freshwater applications.
Yes. The Rulon drag system delivers smooth, progressive drag pressure to handle runs and keep fish pinned during the fight. Combined with the eight bearing system and Speed Lube formula, the reel operates smoothly across a wide temperature range.
The externally adjustable magnetic control system lets you tweak backlash prevention without disassembling the reel. You can dial it in for your casting style and the lure weight you're throwing.
The Laser MG is built for freshwater with stainless steel double-shielded bearings and Speed Lube that perform well in heat, cold, and humidity. For extended saltwater use, a dedicated saltwater reel is the better choice due to corrosion risk.
