L.E. Wilson
The L.E. Wilson Case Gage 30-30 is a precision measuring tool built to solve one of the most common—and costly—mistakes in handloading: oversizing brass. Whether you're setting up a full-length resizing die or checking fired cases for proper headspace, this one-piece gage gives you the accuracy you need to extend case life and maintain consistent chamber fit. If you reload 30-30 ammunition and want to avoid the premature case failure that comes from careless resizing, a case gage isn't optional—it's essential.
At its core, the Wilson gage checks two critical dimensions: overall case length (to flag when trimming is needed) and datum-to-head length (the measurement that ensures correct headspace and prevents the over-resizing that destroys brass). The tool works with any caliper, making it a straightforward addition to your reloading bench. The knurled middle section gives you a solid grip, and the stepped design accommodates the case shoulders and body without guesswork.
This is the standard style gage—designed for rimmed and rimless cartridges like the 30-30. L.E. Wilson also makes an adjustable version for belted magnum cases, but this fixed gage is the right choice for Winchester-type chambers where the rim or shoulder provides the headspace reference. Used correctly with your calipers, it's your insurance against the slow creep of case growth that shortens case life and creates dangerous pressure conditions.
| Overall Length | 2.494" |
| Large End ID | 0.473" |
| Small End ID | 0.347" |
| Outer Diameter | 0.991" |
| Finish | Silver with knurled center |
| Included | Gage and instructions |
After resizing a case, place it in the gage and measure the datum-to-head length with a caliper. Compare that to your fired case measurement. If the resized case is longer than fired brass, your die is sized correctly and won't cause over-resizing. This measurement ensures you're removing just enough material for proper fit without unnecessarily working the brass.
No. The L.E. Wilson Case Gage 30-30 is a standard fixed-style gage designed for rimmed and rimless cartridges. If you reload belted magnums, L.E. Wilson makes a separate adjustable-style gage that accounts for belt-to-head variation in those cases.
You'll need any standard caliper to take the measurements. The gage itself comes with instructions. The caliper measures the distance from the shoulder contact point to the case head—the critical datum-to-head dimension that tells you if your resizing is correct.
Use the gage when you first set up your resizing die to confirm it's adjusted correctly. After that, spot-check cases periodically through your reloading runs to catch any drift in die setup. As cases accumulate wear cycles, regular gaging helps you identify when they've work-hardened enough that they need closer attention or eventual retirement.
