L.E. Wilson
The L.E. Wilson 44-40 Winchester case gage is a precision measurement tool built for handloaders who want to get their .44-40 brass dialed in correctly before sizing. Whether you're setting up a full-length resizing die or just verifying that fired cases are within safe headspace specs, this one-piece gage gives you the reference point you need to avoid the common mistake of oversizing brass—which burns through case life fast and can compromise safety. It's the kind of unassuming tool that prevents expensive do-overs and keeps your reloading bench disciplined.
Using the Wilson gage alongside a quality caliper, you can measure both overall case length (to flag cases needing trimming) and datum-to-head length (to confirm proper headspace before full-length sizing). This dual-purpose approach is the foundation of consistent, reliable reloads. The gage itself is compact and straightforward: a solid piece of machined steel with knurled grip in the middle so you can handle it without fumbling, finished in silver. It comes with instructions and arrives in a cardboard box ready to go straight into your equipment rotation.
If you're running a progressive or single-stage press and want to avoid the headspace guesswork that catches too many reloaders off guard, the L.E. Wilson 44-40 case gage is a small investment that pays for itself the first time it stops you from sizing a batch of brass into the scrap bin.
| Cartridge | .44-40 Winchester |
| Overall Length | 2.494" |
| ID – Large End | .473" |
| ID – Small End | .347" |
| OD | .991" |
| Finish | Silver with center knurling |
| Included | Gage and instructions |
Insert a fired, unfired, or sized case into the gage and measure the overall length and the datum-to-head length using a caliper. The gage dimensions serve as your reference point: if your case measurements match the gage, headspace is correct. If they're longer, you need to resize. This is the proper way to dial in a 7/8"-14 press-type die without guessing.
Yes. The L.E. Wilson 44-40 gage works with any reloading press or die system, since it's a standalone measurement reference, not a press-mounted tool. Use it to verify your die setup before you load a full batch.
The gage itself and instructions. You'll need to supply your own caliper to take measurements.
Improper headspace—usually from oversizing during resizing—dramatically shortens case life and can create pressure issues. The L.E. Wilson case gage lets you measure headspace accurately so you can resize only as much as necessary, keeping your brass in service longer and your loads safer.
