Knight & Hale
The Knight & Hale HD Slate Pot Call is a classic turkey call designed for hunters who want precise control over a full range of turkey vocalizations. Built with a slate striking surface paired with a walnut pot body and hand-matched hickory striker, this call lets you produce everything from subtle purrs and clucks for birds working close to aggressive yelps and cuts that carry across open ground. The slate surface responds to different striking techniques and pressure, giving you the versatility to adapt your calling to changing situations throughout the season.
What sets this call apart is its balance of simplicity and sound control. The included scouring pad lets you condition the slate surface to fine-tune friction and tonal qualities—a small detail that makes a real difference in how the call responds. Whether you're working a henned-up tom that needs soft vocalizations or trying to pull in a distant bird, the HD Slate's design lets you achieve both with the same call. The walnut and hickory construction feels solid in hand and gives you tactile feedback as you work the striker.
This is a hands-on call that rewards practice and technique. Knight & Hale builds these in the USA, and the craftsmanship shows in how the materials are matched. If you prefer a call that gives you direct control over tone and volume rather than relying on a diaphragm or electronic device, the HD Slate Pot Call is worth adding to your turkey vest.

The HD Slate is capable of producing clucks, purrs, yelps, cackles, and cuts. Soft purrs and clucks work best for close-range calling, while louder yelps and cuts carry farther. The specific sounds and their volume depend on your striking technique, pressure, and which part of the slate surface you use.
Use the included scouring pad to condition the striking surface as needed. This adjusts the friction level and helps you achieve your preferred tones. The more you condition it, the more surface texture you create for different sound characteristics.
Hold the call away from your body, cupped between your index finger and thumb. Grip the hickory striker like a pencil at approximately a 70-degree angle, resting your other fingers solidly against the call for stability. Use light pressure and work primarily in the upper third of the call for consistent pitches; the center produces deeper tones. Different movements—straight lines for clucks and cuts, oval motions for yelps, slow slides for purrs—create different vocalizations.
Yes. The slate pot call's versatility lets you produce soft, close-range sounds for birds nearby and louder vocalizations that carry longer distances. This makes it useful throughout a hunt as turkeys respond and change their distance from you.
