Hunters Specialties
The Hunters Specialties Lonesome Cow Call is a specialized elk call designed to cut through the noise and distance of backcountry hunting. Built with a larger call body, this cow call produces higher pitch tones with increased volume—giving your bugles the reach they need to turn the heads of responsive bulls across a drainage or meadow. Whether you're a DIY caller or adding a secondary call to your pack, the straightforward operation (bite, blow, and listen for the response) keeps your focus on glassing and positioning rather than fiddling with mechanics in the field.
Cow calls serve a distinct role in elk hunting: they mimic the vocalizations that draw bulls during rut, often triggering aggressive or curious responses when used in combination with bugle work or alone as a "lone cow" advertisement. The enlarged design here prioritizes projection so your calls don't get swallowed by wind or terrain the way smaller calls can. That reach is particularly valuable when conditions force you to call from distance or when you need to make contact with elk on the far side of cover.
This is a no-frills tool made for hunters who already understand elk behavior and calling strategy. If you're new to cow calling, spend time listening to recordings of real elk and practicing your cadence before the season; a poorly executed call does more harm than silence. For experienced callers or those adding another option to their arsenal, the Lonesome Cow Call delivers the volume and pitch you're after.
This call is designed to attract elk, particularly bulls responding to cow vocalizations during the rut. Effectiveness depends on season, herd composition, and how well you execute the calling technique.
The mechanics are straightforward—blow and bite to produce the call. However, realistic execution takes practice. Spend time studying real elk sounds and your cadence before hunting season.
The enlarged call body amplifies volume and raises the pitch, allowing your calls to carry farther and command attention from bulls at greater distances compared to smaller cow calls.
