Hornady
The Hornady V-MAX 22 caliber (.224) 55 grain flat base bullets are purpose-built for varmint reloaders who demand explosive terminal performance and reliable accuracy across a range of shot distances. Built on proven design principles—polymer tip, swaged lead core, and aerodynamic profile—these match-grade projectiles deliver the dramatic expansion and fragmentation that define the V-MAX line, even at velocities as low as 1600 fps.
The V-MAX's polymer tip isn't just cosmetic; it's engineered around a hollow cavity that drives terminal performance. On impact, the hard tip shaft accelerates into the swaged lead core, triggering rapid expansion and violent fragmentation. The concentricity of Hornady's AMP jacket ensures consistent accuracy shot to shot, while the swaged core—precisely formed around the tip cavity—maximizes the energy transfer that separates a V-MAX from standard varmint rounds. This combination works across the velocity spectrum, delivering results whether you're loading hot loads or subsonic rounds.
The streamlined, sharp-pointed profile yields a high ballistic coefficient, meaning flatter trajectories and less wind drift downrange. The generous bearing surface improves in-flight stability, and the flat base design locks in that consistency for long-range work. Whether you're handloading for prairie dogs, coyotes, or precision varmint competition, these 55-grain projectiles give you the terminal authority and accuracy needed to make clean, ethical shots.
| Caliber | .224 (22 Caliber) |
| Bullet Weight | 55 Grains |
| Base Type | Flat Base |
| Bullet Type | Polymer Tip Varmint |
| Jacket Type | AMP (Match Grade) |
These .224 caliber bullets are designed for rifles chambered in 22-caliber cartridges, including .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, and similar centerfire 22-caliber rounds. Always verify your specific cartridge and firearm manufacturer's specifications before loading.
Yes. One of the V-MAX line's strengths is reliable expansion and fragmentation even at velocities as low as 1600 fps, making them versatile across different load combinations and hunting scenarios.
The AMP jacket used in V-MAX construction is match-grade, engineered for superior concentricity to support maximum accuracy at all ranges. This consistency shot-to-shot makes them excellent for both hunting and precision work.
The V-MAX's high ballistic coefficient results from its sharp, pointed polymer tip and aerodynamic profile—designed to resist wind drift and deliver flat trajectories at extended distances.
