Hornady
Hornady V-MAX bullets in .22 caliber (.224" diameter, 55 grain) are purpose-built for varmint hunting and precision rifle work where explosive terminal performance matters. This 250-count box gives you a reliable supply of match-grade bullets engineered to fragment violently on impact, delivering the kind of clean, ethical kills that make varmint hunting efficient and effective at practical hunting distances.
The V-MAX design hinges on a hard polymer tip with a hollow cavity that sits above a precisely swaged lead core. On impact, the tip's shaft compresses and transfers energy into the core, initiating rapid expansion and fragmentation—even at low terminal velocities around 1600 fps. This means you can reach out farther and still get reliable expansion, whether you're shooting prairie dogs at 50 yards or working edge habitat at longer ranges. Hornady's match-grade AMP jacket is drawn to tight concentricity tolerances, which translates directly to shot-to-shot accuracy and consistent terminal behavior. The flat-base design and aerodynamic profile combine to deliver a high ballistic coefficient and stable flight, helping you maintain velocity and energy downrange while keeping your group sizes tight.
Reloaders who prioritize accuracy and terminal performance recognize the V-MAX as a benchmark in the rimfire and small-caliber rifle space. The .224" 55-grain weight is a popular choice for .223 Remington and similar cartridges, making this 250-count box a practical resupply for serious varmint work or high-volume practice. If you're handloading for precision and need a bullet that delivers both on the target and on the animal, the Hornady V-MAX deserves a place in your loading press.
| Caliber | .22 cal |
| Diameter | .224" |
| Weight | 55 grains |
| Bullet Type | V-MAX (polymer tip, hollow cavity) |
| Base Style | Flat |
| Count Per Box | 250 |
| Jacket | Match-grade AMP (drawn) |
The .224" diameter and 55-grain weight make these suitable for cartridges like .223 Remington and similar .22 centerfire rifles. Always consult your specific firearm's manual or manufacturer for compatibility and recommended load data before reloading.
Yes. The Hornady V-MAX is engineered for expansion and fragmentation even at low terminal velocities around 1600 fps, making it reliable across a wider range of impact velocities than many competing designs. This gives you more flexibility in your shooting distance and load development.
The hollow cavity allows the polymer tip's hard shaft to build up energy before driving into the lead core. On impact, this stored energy causes rapid expansion and violent fragmentation of both the core and jacket, resulting in clean, efficient terminal performance on varmints.
A 250-count box is a standard quantity for handloading. It's sufficient for a reloading session or to maintain inventory, though high-volume shooters often buy multiple boxes. The quantity lets you test loads and practice without the bulk of larger component orders.
