Hornady
The Hornady SST 7.62x39mm 123 grain rifle bullet is a polymer-tipped reloading component engineered for controlled expansion and reliable performance across a wide range of hunting applications. Built on the InterLock platform, these bullets combine aerodynamic efficiency with a design philosophy centered on consistent terminal performance—making them a solid choice for reloaders who feed AR-platform rifles, AKs, and other 7.62x39 platforms and want factory-quality results without the factory ammunition premium.
The SST (Super Shock Tip) uses a polymer tip to boost ballistic coefficient, which translates to flatter trajectories and retained velocity downrange. On impact, that same tip collapses inward to initiate controlled, predictable expansion. The secant ogive boattail profile reduces drag and helps maintain energy, while a cannelure provides a reliable seating surface for consistent crimping. The InterLock ring—Hornady's mechanical lock between jacket and core—keeps the bullet intact during expansion, preserving mass for deep penetration and dependable energy transfer.
These aren't match-grade target bullets; they're purpose-built for hunters reloading ammunition for game. The 123-grain weight is the standard for the 7.62x39 platform, and the spitzer profile gives you aerodynamics without sacrificing the robust construction that suits intermediate-power rifle hunting. Whether you're handloading for whitetail, hog, or similar-frame game, this bullet delivers the terminal characteristics you expect from a name like Hornady without the hassle of sorting mixed-lot ammunition.
| Caliber | 7.62x39mm |
| Weight | 123 grains |
| Bullet Type | Polymer Tip Spitzer |
| Jacket Type | InterLock |
| Quantity per Box | 100 |
The 7.62x39mm is the standard cartridge for AR-15 platforms chambered in .300 Blackout intermediate variants, AK-pattern rifles, and other firearms using that caliber. Always verify your specific rifle's reloading data before assembling ammunition.
Yes. The cannelure provides a crimp groove for consistent seating and bullet retention, and the 123-grain weight is the standard load for 7.62x39 handloading. Consult published reloading data specific to this bullet weight and your powder charge.
The InterLock ring is a mechanical lock between the bullet's jacket and lead core. During expansion on impact, it keeps the jacket and core bonded together, preserving bullet mass and energy so you get a larger, more consistent wound channel rather than fragmentation or core-jacket separation.
The SST is designed with the polymer tip to initiate expansion upon impact. Always reference published ballistic testing and handloading data for your specific rifle and load to confirm performance in your application.
