Hornady
The Hornady XTP 45 Cal .451 230 gr Hollow Point is a serious choice for reloaders who demand consistent, reliable performance from their handloads. These jacketed hollow-point bullets are engineered for expansion across the full spectrum of handgun velocities—from modest revolver loads to hot semi-auto rounds—making them equally at home in defensive, hunting, or competition applications. The 230-grain weight is the standard for full-power .45 ACP and .45 Colt loads, delivering the kind of terminal performance that has made XTP bullets a staple in reloading rooms across North America.
What sets the XTP apart is its controlled expansion design. Precise serrations are cut into the bullet's jacket before it ever reaches your press, strategically weakening it to promote even, symmetrical expansion rather than the unpredictable mushrooming of cheaper alternatives. The swaged core—drawn to exact uniformity—ensures that expansion happens reliably and consistently shot after shot, while the varying jacket thickness along the bullet's length gives you an expansion profile that plated bullets simply can't match. On revolver applications, the integral cannelure (applied before final forming to avoid distortion) gives you a crimp reference that locks in consistent seating depth.
Each box contains 100 bullets, and this product is sold in 15-box cases for serious reloaders who shoot enough to justify bulk purchasing. Whether you're working up accurate practice loads, building defensive ammunition, or chasing precision at the range, the XTP's track record speaks for itself.
| Caliber | 45 Cal (.451") |
| Weight | 230 gr |
| Bullet Type | Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) |
| Quantity per Box | 100 |
| Quantity per Case | 1500 (15 boxes × 100) |
| Jacket Material | Drawn Gilding Metal |
The .451" diameter and 230-grain weight are standard for both cartridges, so yes—load data and safe velocities will differ between the two, but the bullets themselves are compatible with both.
The combination of pre-formed serrations, controlled jacket thickness tapering, and a uniformly swaged core allows the XTP to expand evenly and reliably at the low velocities typical of .45 revolvers as well as the higher speeds of semi-auto loads—something plated or mono-metal bullets struggle with.
Yes. The XTP's reputation for controlled expansion and deep penetration is built on its proven performance in real-world conditions, which is why law enforcement and serious defensive shooters use them.
On revolver loads, the cannelure provides a crimp groove that helps you seat and crimp the bullet consistently and securely. Semi-auto reloaders typically load below the cannelure or don't use the crimp feature at all.
