Daniel Defense
The Daniel Defense MK12 SPR URG is a complete 5.56 NATO upper receiver group purpose-built for precision rifle work. This isn't a generic upper—it's engineered around the proven MK12 Special Purpose Rifle platform, originally developed to USSOCOM specifications. If you're building a rifle that needs to deliver consistent accuracy at distance without unnecessary weight or complexity, this upper receiver brings professional-grade components and thoughtful design from the ground up.
At the heart of the MK12 SPR URG is an 18" stainless steel barrel with a 1-7 twist rate and MK12 profile, paired with a rifle-length direct impingement gas system. This configuration delivers the balance that makes the MK12 concept work: enough velocity for effective range performance, manageable recoil, and the reliability of a proven gas tube system. The low-profile gas block is machined from hardened 416 steel and built to the same exacting Crane specs that defined the original platform.
The construction details matter. You get a hard coat anodized Mil-Spec aluminum upper receiver paired with a chrome-lined M16 profile bolt carrier group—components chosen for durability and consistent function in varied conditions. The 12" DDM4 rail gives you plenty of real estate for optics and accessories without excess length, and the included MK12 flash suppressor rounds out the package. Every element here serves the rifle's purpose: reliable, accurate, precision-focused shooting without unnecessary features or marketing filler.
This upper receiver works as part of a complete AR-15 build on any 5.56 NATO lower receiver. Whether you're assembling a dedicated precision rifle for the range or building a versatile mid-range platform for hunting, the MK12 SPR URG brings proven performance in a turnkey upper package.

This upper receiver is designed to work with any standard AR-15 lower receiver chambered in 5.56 NATO. Make sure your lower is properly built and functions—the upper installs the same way as any other AR platform upper.
Yes. The 18" barrel and 1-7 twist rate are well-suited to hunting applications where mid-range precision matters. The MK12 platform has a long history of real-world use, and the configuration balances velocity, accuracy, and practical handling.
The 1-7 twist rate handles standard 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammunition across a wide range of bullet weights. A 1-7 twist is actually more versatile than faster twists for general shooting—it stabilizes everything from 55-grain to heavier rounds without issue.
The MK12 flash suppressor is included with the upper receiver as described, but permanent installation (pinning and welding) is not covered in the provided specifications. Check your local regulations and work with a qualified gunsmith if permanent attachment is required in your area.
