The Caldwell Prairie Dog Popper Target brings interactive shooting practice to your range with AR500 steel construction built to handle centerfire rifle fire. This self-resetting target combines durable steel with spring-actuated mechanics, so each shot knocks the target backward and automatically returns it to battery—no walking downrange between rounds. If you're training for hunting accuracy, sighting in a new rifle, or just looking for engaging range time, an auto-reset target delivers instant feedback and keeps you focused on your fundamentals.

The target mounts on a 7-inch elevated stand that sets up quickly in most terrain without complicated anchoring. The heavy-duty 3/8-inch AR500 steel is rated for centerfire rifle use and built to last through serious volume. Whether you're working on precision at distance or practicing rapid sight picture recovery, the pop-and-reset action holds your attention and accelerates your feedback loop in ways stationary targets can't match.

Each target ships with a free-standing frame, the popper target itself, and ground stakes to secure everything downrange. For best results and maximum longevity, keep impact velocities at or below 3,000 fps and impact energy at or below 3,500 ft. lbs. That covers most hunting and tactical rifle loads, making this a practical choice for hunters and sport shooters who want targets that work as hard as they do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this target work with my hunting rifle?

Yes. The Caldwell Prairie Dog Popper is rated for centerfire rifle use. To ensure longevity, keep your shots at or below 3,000 fps impact velocity and 3,500 ft. lbs. impact energy—a range that covers most common hunting loads.

Do I have to reset the target manually after each shot?

No. The integrated spring mechanism automatically resets the target to the firing position after each impact, eliminating trips downrange and letting you maintain focus on your shooting.

What comes in the box?

Each target includes a free-standing frame, the AR500 popper target, and ground stakes for anchoring to the ground.

How stable is the stand on uneven ground?

The 7-inch elevated stand is designed for quick setup across multiple terrain types. Ground stakes are included to secure it in place, and the frame sits clear of the ground to accommodate variable surfaces at most ranges and hunting locations.
