Bushnell
The Bushnell R5 3-9x40 rifle scope is a reliable workhorse for hunters and shooters looking for a versatile magnification range in a compact, durable package. Built around a 1-inch tube and featuring fully multi-coated HD glass, this scope delivers clear, bright images across its entire zoom range—from close-range brush hunting to mid-distance precision shooting. The illuminated MultiX reticle gives you a floating center dot with traditional crosshair posts, letting you pick the aiming point that works best for your hunting style or target situation.
What sets this scope apart is the attention to lens protection. Bushnell's EXO Barrier coating is applied to all exterior lenses, creating a hydrophobic shield that repels water, oil, dust, and debris. In the field, that means less glare from wet glass, cleaner optics after a morning fog, and longer stretches between cleanings—especially valuable when you're deep in rough country and can't baby your gear.
The illuminated reticle is handy for low-light hunts or when you need to dial up brightness against dark backgrounds, though the reticle itself is glass-etched, so you'll always have a visible aiming point even if the illumination battery dies. The 40mm objective gives you solid light gathering without adding unnecessary weight or bulk to your rifle, making this scope equally at home on a lightweight carry gun or a dedicated hunting rifle.
Whether you're setting up a new rifle or upgrading from older glass, the R5 3-9x40 is the kind of scope that stays put and keeps working. No complicated features to fiddle with—just clear glass, a sensible reticle, and the durability you need when the shot matters.
| Magnification | 3-9x |
| Objective Diameter | 40mm |
| Tube Diameter | 1 inch |
| Reticle Type | Illuminated MultiX with floating center dot |
| Lens Coating | Fully multi-coated HD glass; EXO Barrier on exterior lenses |
| Model | R5-3940S9 |
The 1-inch tube is a universal standard, so this scope will fit any rifle with standard Picatinny rails or conventional scope rings. Double-check your rifle's mount system before ordering rings, but 1-inch is by far the most common configuration across centerfire rifles.
Yes. The MultiX reticle is glass-etched, which means it's physically engraved into the glass itself. The illumination adds brightness in low light, but you'll always have a visible aiming point regardless of battery status.
The 40mm objective provides solid light gathering, and the illuminated reticle helps in dim conditions by allowing you to brighten the center dot. That said, the 40mm is a balance between light transmission and weight—it's a capable, practical choice for most hunting situations rather than specialized for extreme low-light performance.
EXO Barrier is a hydrophobic coating applied to the exterior lenses that repels water, oil, and dust. In practice, this keeps your glass clearer longer in wet, muddy, or dusty conditions—reducing the need for frequent cleaning and helping maintain sight picture when you can't wipe your scope down.
