Brownells
Building a custom hunting rifle on a Mauser 98 action doesn't have to mean starting from scratch. The Brownells Mauser Short Chambered Barrel in 308 Winchester with 1-10 twist gives you a factory-grade foundation ready to finish—saving time and money compared to a full custom barrel build. At 24 inches, this barrel strikes the balance hunters need: short enough for quick handling in timber or tight blinds, long enough to wring solid velocity from the .308 Winchester cartridge. The 1-10 rifling twist works across the broad range of .308 loads, from lightweight hunting rounds to heavier match-grade ammunition.
Brownells barrels are manufactured from 4140 chrome moly steel and stress-relieved to resist warping during the final finishing steps. The button-rifled construction delivers consistent bore quality, and the barrel arrives short chambered (meaning you'll complete the chambering to your exact specifications) and fully threaded, ready for your choice of muzzle device or suppressor adapter. The crowned muzzle protects the rifling and promotes accuracy. This is hands-on gunsmithing for the builder who wants control over every detail—you'll set headspace, finish the exterior to match your action, and dial in the fit yourself.
Whether you're restocking a vintage Mauser or building a compact, efficient hunting rifle from the ground up, this barrel gives you the quality and flexibility that factory rifles often can't match. It's the kind of component that separates a truly personal rifle from something off the shelf.
| Caliber | 308 Winchester |

Short chambered means the chamber is not finished to standard depth. You'll need to complete the chambering process, setting headspace to your specifications using a headspace gauge and your gunsmithing equipment. This gives you full control over the final fit and allows professional-grade customization.
This barrel is designed for Mauser 98 actions. Verify that your specific action accepts a threaded barrel and is compatible with the Brownells installation specs before ordering.
Yes. The 1-10 twist rate is suitable for the broad range of .308 Winchester ammunition available, from lightweight hunting loads to heavier rounds.
After chambering and headspacing, you'll need to polish and blue (or otherwise finish) the exterior of the barrel to match your action and protect against corrosion. This is a gunsmithing step and is not included with the barrel.
