Barnes Bullets
The Barnes Buster .458" 400-grain bullet is purpose-built for hunters using 45/70 Government rifles and lever-action platforms. These fully-cast projectiles deliver the penetration and durability demanded by hunters pursuing large, tough game—including wild boar, bear, buffalo, bison, and moose. Barnes engineered the Buster with a thick copper jacket bonded to a heavy core, creating a bullet that won't separate or fail when bone and sinew demand uncompromising performance.
What sets the Buster apart is its combination of deep penetration and weight retention. The heavy construction and solid bonding mean you get pass-through performance on large game without the bullet fragmenting or deflecting off bone and hard obstacles. That straight-line tracking is critical in lever-rifle hunting, where shots may come at odd angles and distance estimation can be rough.
The 400-grain weight is the sweet spot for 45/70 ballistics, offering the velocity stability and downrange energy that made the cartridge legendary for dangerous game and long-range hunting. Whether you're handloading for a Marlin 1895, Henry, or other lever-action platform, or developing ammunition for a single-shot 45/70, the Buster gives you a bullet engineered for real hunting situations, not just range plinking.
| Caliber | 45/70 Government (.458") |
| Bullet Weight | 400 grains |
| Bullet Diameter | .458" |
| Construction | Copper-jacketed, fully-cast with bonded core |
| Intended Use | Big game hunting—handguns and lever-action rifles |
The Buster is engineered for large, dangerous game including wild boar, bear, buffalo, bison, and moose. The heavy construction, deep penetration, and weight retention make it well-suited for thick-skinned, heavily-boned animals.
Yes. The Buster is designed for 45/70 Government cartridges and is compatible with lever-action rifles such as the Marlin 1895 and Henry platforms, as well as single-shot and other 45/70-chambered firearms.
The Buster's thick copper jacket is bonded to a heavy core, which means the bullet retains weight through bone and tissue. This bonded construction prevents separation and ensures the bullet remains intact for deep, reliable penetration.
Deflection causes bullets to veer off course when they hit bone, angles, or hard obstacles—potentially resulting in poor shot placement. The Buster's heavy, straight-line design resists deflection, helping you maintain trajectory and vital-organ impact even in real-world hunting conditions.
