Building or upgrading an AR-15 platform rifle? The Ballistic Advantage Modern Series 16" 5.56 NATO AR-15 barrel is a precision-machined upgrade designed for shooters who want accuracy, reliability, and longevity in their build. Machined from 4150 chrome-moly-vanadium steel and finished in a hard, corrosion-resistant QPQ coating, this midlength, government-profile barrel handles both military 5.56x45mm and civilian .223 Remington ammunition, giving you flexibility at the range or in the field.

The government profile geometry is a proven design trusted across the shooting world—it balances durability with weight for rifles built to shoot reliably without excess bulk. The midlength gas system pairs well with the 16" barrel length, offering a natural balance between velocity, handling, and controllability that works equally well for tactical builds, competition rigs, or general-purpose hunting rifles. Ballistic Advantage's attention to barrel harmonics—controlled taper and symmetrical profile—helps your barrel return consistently to its zero after each shot, benefiting both precision and rapid fire follow-ups.

The nickel-boron coated barrel extension and M4 feed ramps ensure smooth, reliable feeding and extraction cycle after cycle. Whether you're assembling a complete rifle from parts or swapping a worn barrel, this is quality steel backed by a maker known for taking the guesswork out of AR builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ammunition does this barrel fire?

This barrel is chambered in 5.56 NATO and will reliably feed and fire both military-spec 5.56x45mm and civilian .223 Remington ammunition.

What is the government profile, and why does it matter?

The government profile is a classic, proven AR-15 barrel contour that balances weight, strength, and heat capacity. It's widely recognized among AR builders and shooters for dependable performance across a range of applications—from general shooting to competition to hunting.

Is this barrel suitable for a hunting or competition AR-15 build?

Yes. The 16" midlength government-profile configuration is versatile enough for hunting rifles, target shooting, and competitive use. The balanced gas system and consistent barrel harmonics support both accuracy and rapid follow-up shots.

What does the QPQ finish do?

QPQ is a salt-bath finishing process that creates a hard, corrosion-resistant surface on the steel. It protects the barrel from rust and wear, particularly useful if you shoot in wet or humid conditions or store your rifle long-term.
