Ballistic Advantage
The Ballistic Advantage 17.7" Hanson Mid-Length 5.56 NATO AR Barrel is a solid choice for builders and shooters looking to upgrade or complete an AR-15 platform rifle. Built from 4150 chrome moly vanadium steel and finished with a QPQ coating for corrosion resistance, this heavy profile barrel offers the durability you need for range sessions, hunting, or duty use. The mid-length gas system strikes a balance between velocity and shooter comfort, while the 17.7" length keeps your overall rifle handy without sacrificing too much velocity—practical for most 5.56 applications from close quarters to mid-range targets.
Ballistic Advantage barrels are known for solid manufacturing tolerances and consistent reliability. This Hanson profile is designed to handle high round counts and thermal stress, making it a dependable foundation whether you're building a patrol rifle, a hunting AR, or a dedicated range gun. The QPQ finish is tougher than standard parkerizing, so you'll see better corrosion resistance if you're running it in less-than-ideal conditions or storing it long-term.
Installation requires basic AR-15 armorer knowledge—barrel extension, proper headspacing, and torque specs—so plan accordingly if you're new to building. Once installed, this barrel is ready to shoot and won't nickel-and-dime you with unexpected failures or poor accuracy out of the box.
| Barrel Length | 17.7" |
| Caliber | 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington |
| Barrel Profile | Hanson (Heavy) |
| Gas System | Mid-Length |
| Material | 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium Steel |
| Finish | QPQ |
| Platform | AR-15 |
| Model / Part Number | BA BABL556018F |
Yes, this is a standard AR-15 profile barrel. The barrel itself is what you receive—you'll need to source or have an armorer install the barrel extension (gas tube), install it in an upper receiver, and verify headspace. No bolt carrier group, handguard, or other components are included.
Mid-length gas systems position the gas port between carbine and rifle length, resulting in a slower, gentler recoil impulse than a carbine setup while still allowing shorter overall rifle builds compared to a rifle-length system. This makes mid-length a practical all-around choice for hunting and tactical rifles.
QPQ (Quench Polish Quench) is a salt-bath nitriding process that hardens the steel surface and dramatically improves corrosion and wear resistance. It lasts longer in the field and resists rust better than standard parkerizing, which is especially valuable if you hunt in wet or humid climates.
Heavy profile barrels are stiffer and distribute heat more effectively during sustained or rapid fire, which reduces vertical stringing and thermal shift. They're ideal for precision work at the range or hunting, though they do add some weight to your rifle compared to a lightweight profile.
