Ed Brown
Building a 1911 that runs like it should means investing in quality parts, and the Ed Brown Machined Ambidextrous Wide Match Safety (blued) is a no-compromise upgrade for shooters who demand reliable operation and ergonomic control. Unlike stamped safeties that can warp or develop casting porosity, this one is fully machined from solid steel, giving you the kind of durability and consistency that matters when you're at the range or in the field. The wide thumb pad is designed for fast, positive engagement—whether you're shooting left-handed or right-handed, you get a substantial contact surface that doesn't require awkward grip repositioning.
The Ed Brown design uses a special included hammer pin to secure the safety without forcing you to modify your grip panels, a thoughtful detail that keeps your 1911 looking original while upgrading its function. Because it's machined rather than cast, you're getting superior dimensional accuracy and resistance to the wear that comes with repeated cycling. The blued finish gives it that classic 1911 aesthetics while protecting the steel underneath.
This safety is spec'd for all standard 1911-pattern frames and comes with complete installation instructions. Do note that minor gunsmith fitting is required to ensure safe, reliable operation—this isn't a drop-in part, but that fitting step is what guarantees it works properly on your gun. If you're building a competition rig, upgrading a carry gun, or refreshing an older frame, a machined ambi safety like this one is one of the smartest moves you can make.
